Euralarm publishes position paper on Thermographic Fire Detectors

The Euralarm Fire Section has published a new position paper addressing the growing use of thermographic fire detectors (TFD) and the current lack of a dedicated European standard.

As the deployment of thermographic technology in fire detection systems continues to increase, the paper highlights the need for clearer guidance and harmonised standards. While thermographic fire detectors can currently be certified as flame detectors under EN 54-10, this approach may lead to confusion when such devices are used outside their intended scope.

To address this, Euralarm provides a set of recommendations aimed at improving clarity, transparency and consistency in the market. These include:

  • Following ISO 7240-33 as a reference until a European standard becomes available
  • Developing a dedicated EN 54 standard for thermographic fire detectors, separate from video fire detection
  • Ensuring transparency in testing conditions when EN 54-10 certification is applied
  • Clearly communicating limitations and conditions of use to installers and end users
  • Promoting alignment with existing standards for power supply, system integration and compatibility

The paper also stresses the importance of distinguishing between the use of TFDs as certified flame detectors and their use in broader applications, as this affects compliance requirements and performance expectations.

By publishing this document, Euralarm aims to support industry stakeholders, standards bodies and policymakers in developing an appropriate regulatory framework for this emerging technology.
