Standards meet the future: on 12 October, CEN and CENELEC celebrate World Standards Day

30 September 2018

European standards are fundamental for the functioning of the EU Single Market: by setting common rules and a coherent system all across Europe, they support the free circulation of products and services. Understanding their contribution is fundamental, especially this year when the Single Market’s 25th anniversary is being celebrated.

Celebrating the Single Market successes must be coupled with looking ahead: in a globalised economy which is constantly evolving, it is increasingly important to be open to change and to look forward. Stakeholders and standardisers at all levels need to explore how to collaborate to ensure that standards can maintain their relevance in favouring Europe’s growth and competitiveness in the digital economy, in order to have an economy that is fit for the future.

These issues and many others will be at the centre of the conference ‘Standards meet the future’, that will take place in the framework of World Standards Day (#WSD2018) and of the Single Market’s 25th Anniversary on Friday 12 October. The one-day conference, jointly organised by the European Standardisation Organisations (CEN, CENELEC, ETSI), the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), will take place in Centre Albert Borschette in Brussels.

Throughout the course of the day, a varied group of speakers coming from industry, the European institutions, the standardisation bodies and societal organisations will discuss in a series of panels how standards contribute to the Single Market, are supporting the 4th Industrial Revolution and how they can shape the next big digital revolution.
Particular attention will be given to how coordination between all stakeholders active in the field of standardisation – which include CEN-CENELEC partner Euralarm, across subjects, can be ensured: a necessary development in the new context in which technological and digital developments are cross-sectoral and horizontal.
