Euralarm was at Standards meet the future conference

26 October 2018

On Friday October 12th, in the frame of the World Standard day and on the 25th anniversary of the European single market, Euralarm joined the conference ‘Standards meet the future’ organised by CEN/CENELEC , ETSI, EFTA and the European Commission.

Panels of experts reviewed the history and future of standardisation, the impact it has had on the Single Market and how standards help in lowering trade barriers between countries in Europe. The conference was the occasion to highlight that standardisation has had a positive impact for businesses and consumers. The European mobile network, a simplified European banking system and cross country sales are just a few examples of what the EU has achieved thanks to standards. Many such examples positive effects of standardisation can also be found for the fire safety and security Industry.

However, the conference’s attendants took stock that there is still a lot to be done in matters of standardisation. Regulatory challenges including the upcoming Cybersecurity Act’s and the Construction Product Regulation’s impact on European businesses need to be solved. It highlights also the importance for Euralarm to be actively involved in the process of making new regulations. Developing a good standard takes time and needs input from all stakeholders including SMEs and consumers. Since technology and market environment are rapidly changing, we have to ensure that standards remain synchronised with these market developments. As focal point of many of these developments Euralarm and its Members will continue to contribute to the standardisation process.

Standardisation should get more awareness in the European education system as with the public so that people understand the impact standards have on their day to day work and life. In order to achieve this a website was introduced during the conference which gives a good overview of the standardisation world: https://www.standards4all.eu
